Meet us at 5 PM at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center. In the Main Gallery you can take in Resonance, a show featuring four artists from the collective known as Re:Generation. Other Re:Generation exhibits have taken place at the Albrecht-Kemper in St. Joseph and three other sites in Missouri.

In the Front Gallery you’ll see We Are Enough, an exhibit of the work of 55 local artists, curated by Harold Smith. Two other rooms feature artists Olivia Mills and Joseph Sciacca. And don’t miss the Habitat Contemporary downstairs which currently showcases the ceramic work of renowned artist John Eck.

We’ll leave the Crossroads at 6:15 PM and head to the Folly Theater a for a light supper and drinks in the Shareholder’s Lounge. Then we’ll locate our seats for the 7:30 PM performance of Ailey II, part of Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey’s 40th anniversary celebrating the founding of the only second home that the company has—right here in Kansas City.

The entire evening is only $45 per person and is limited to 100 guests, so act quickly as the event will likely sell out. Parking details will be sent the week prior to the event.

As always, tickets are nonrefundable, but they are transferrable. Should your schedule change you are welcome to give or sell your tickets to someone else (and our newly reactivated Facebook page might be useful in this situation.)

Join Arts Alive on January 26 for our first event of 2024.

5:30 PM “Realize Your Dreams” art exhibit plus drinks and a charcuterie supper at Buttonwood Art Space (inside Buttonwood Financial Group)

3013 Main St, Kansas City, MO 64108
7:30 PM “Gaslight (Angel Street)” at Kansas City Actors Theatre

City Stage (lower level of Union Station)

30 W Pershing Rd, KCMO 64108

We gather in Buttonwood Art Space at 5:30 PM to view “Realize Your Dreams.” The exhibit features 170 artworks of varied styles, subject matters, and mediums, including abstracts, landscapes, beaches, vistas, and more. All art is for sale, plus you can do good while you add to your collection. This is because 50% of each purchase benefits Connections to Success, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring families to realize their dreams and achieve economic independence.  The remaining half of any purchase goes directly to the artist and is tax deductible to the purchaser.

Next stop is City Stage at Union Station to enjoy the Kansas City Actors Theatre’s 7:30 PM performance of “Gaslight (Angel Street).” This 1938 Victorian thriller tells the dark tale of a marriage based on deceit, and a husband committed to driving his wife to the brink of insanity. The play is well known for its Academy Award-winning adaptation to the big screen. According to Theater Guide, “Gaslight (Angel Street) is a roller coaster ride of emotions and second-guessing, as we peel back the onion to uncover the layers of deception and twists.”  Fans of Agatha Christie won’t want to miss this edge-of-your-seat drama.

The entire evening is $45 per person and includes food, drink and theater ticket. The event is limited to 80 guests so put your group together quickly and join us.

Kick off the holidays with Te Deum and a private collection tour!

Te Deum performance and the Hoffman’s private art collection

As Arts Alive closes out its 24th year we’ve planned a holiday event you won’t want to miss. The outing includes a concert and our first private collection tour in quite a while. Only 80 tickets are available.

We’ll gather at 5:00 pm to enjoy the extensive art collection of Arts Alive President John Hoffman and his wife Sharon while enjoying cocktails and a light supper in their lovely home.

The Hoffmans began collecting over 50 years ago and you’ll see examples of photo realism and the pop artists Rauschenberg and Frankenthaler represented alongside major ceramic pieces and diverse period furniture.  In addition, the work of African and African American artists Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Mickelene Thomas, Hank Willis Thomas, Nick Cave and Vaughn Span, Theaster Gates and Titus Kaphar are represented throughout the home.

At the Hoffman’s you also enjoy food prepared by Thelma’s Kitchen (a healthy communities initiative of Reconciliation Services) along with wine, beer and soft drinks, all included in the ticket price.

We leave in time to arrive at Village Presbyterian Church and find our reserved seating for Te Deum’s 7:00 PM concert.  Entitled Lessons and Carols for Today, the performance offers a modern twist on the Anglican tradition of interspersing biblical passages with choral and congregational singing.

Collaborating with Te Deum is Kansas City poet Natasha Ria El-Scari. She has written and will perform new poetry to replace the traditional biblical lessons, delivering modern reflections on the Nativity story through an African American feminist lens.

Following the 70-minute concert we are invited to a reception in the church’s Welcome Center featuring cookies and holiday punch. A Lessons book, featuring the poetry Natasha Ria El-Scari wrote for the concert will be available for purchase for $10.00 at the reception.

The entire event is only $45 per person and includes food, drink and concert ticket.  Put your group together and join us. This event is limited to 80 guests, so sign up quickly.

As always, tickets are nonrefundable.

If your schedule changes you are welcome to give or sell your tickets to someone else.

  • 2:00 PM What the Constitution Means to Me, 1 H & R Block Way, Kansas City, MO 64105

Join Arts Alive on the afternoon of Saturday, October 28th, when we visit Corbin Bronze for a tour of Tom Corbin’s current work and a light lunch followed by a two o’clock performance of What the Constitution Means to Me at the Kansas City Rep’s Copaken Stage.

Tom Corbin turned to bronze sculpture in 1986 after an early career in advertising. Over nearly 40 years he has created a body of work that is now represented in more than 20 museums, corporate collections, private collections, and now, most recently, in the United States Capitol featuring the likeness of former President Harry S. Truman.

We arrive at Corbin Studio (located in a former fire house) at noon and tour the studio and sculpture garden.

After a light lunch and drinks at the studio, we leave in time for the 2:00 PM curtain at Copaken Stage for What the Constitution Means to Me.

Fifteen-year-old Heidi earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the United States. In this hilarious, hopeful, and achingly human new play, she resurrects her teenage self to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women and the founding document that shaped their lives. Critics have hailed this Tony-nominated play as hilarious. hopeful, and achingly human.

The entire event is still only $45 per person including the light lunch so put your group together and join us. Space is limited to 100 people at both the studio and the theater.

Lawrence Arts Adventure with Arts Alive KC

Lawrence, Kansas

Lawrence, Kansas

The September Arts Alive Adventure takes us to Lawrence, KS, just a 40-minute from Kansas City. We’ll enjoy three private tours: the newly refurbished Spencer Museum of Art and the Lawrence Arts Center, ending with a private studio visit with artist May Tveit.

The day begins at the Spencer Museum of Art at 10:00 AM. Saralyn Reece Hardy, Museum Director and several of her staff will greet us and provide private guided tours of the collection’s highlights.

With a diverse collection of more than 48,000 art objects and works of cultural significance, the Spencer Museum is the only comprehensive art museum in the state of Kansas and serves more than 100,000 visitors annually. Its vision is to present its collection as a living archive that motivates object-centered research and teaching, creative work, and transformative public dialogue. We will enjoy work by contemporary artists Dread Scott and Paul Stephen Benjamin in Black Writing, among others.

At 11:45 AM we’ll take a five-minute drive to Marceli's Arterra event gallery for lunch (cost is included in your ticket).
At 1:15 PM, we’ll visit the Lawrence Arts Center where three new exhibits began in June. In addition to 12 artist studios and the current exhibits, there are performance spaces with rehearsals underway for upcoming shows. The director and his staff will show us the facility.

If time and energy allow, you can take a self-guided tour of the 2023 Lawrence Annual Outdoor Downtown Sculpture Exhibition that opened June 30. A tour map will be provided with your event reminder.

At 3:00 PM our last stop is the private studio of May Tveit, an industrial design professor at the University of Kansas and an artist whose large-scale works you may have seen at a solo show at the Nerman Museum in 2018. May is looking forward to greeting us to talk about her work and show us around her studio. Her current sculpture and monoprint work explore geometric configurations of cardboard boxes and physical/metaphysical aspects of the self and being. Other exhibitions include (Fields, Planes, Systems: Self) Farmprojects, (Drop Unit) Greenlease Gallery (Template Days) UK Art Museum and (Art on Paper) at the Weatherspoon Museum. May’s work has been featured in Art in America, Art Papers, National Public Radio, Bad at Sports, among other periodicals. Tveit is a Charlotte Street Foundation Fellow and has participated in the Anderson Ranch, Haystack, Art Omi, Frans Masereel Centrum residency programs.

The entire day is priced at $35 and includes all visits and lunch. As always, tickets are nonrefundable. If your schedule changes you are welcome to give or sell your tickets to someone else.

Because of venue capacity, only 65 tickets are available, so sign up quickly so you won't miss out on this very special Lawrence Arts Adventure. Kemper Museum & Prejudice And Pride At The Arts Asylum

June 17 Arts Alive

11 AM Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art with Guided tours and lunch

2 PM “Prejudice and Pride,” a musical comedy at the Arts Asylum

Now into our 24th year, our board is determined to find unique cultural opportunities and discover the many facets of cultural arts in the greater Kansas City community. On Saturday, June 17th we'll enjoy guided tours of art exhibits, lunch and a new musical comedy in a new venue. Activities begin at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art at 11 am with guided tours of current exhibits led by Director of Curatorial Affairs Erin Dziedzic and her staff. You’ll see and learn about work by Virginia Jaramillo, Pepe Mar and Reginald Sylvester, a young Brooklyn-based artist who is making a name for himself in the U.S. and Europe. Lunch will be provided at the museum in two shifts due to available space.

Then we'll drive a short distance to the new home of the Arts Asylum in east Brookside for the 2 p.m. show of “Prejudice and Pride.” The gender-swapped musical comedy set at Hoedown Jane’s Bar, Brill & Shootin’ Range offers a new take on Jane Austen’s classic novel. Banjo-picker Bennett Longborn sings the tale of how he and his brothers must find love (or at least empathy) with their millionaire neighbors before they lose the family farm in Tennessee. Critics say, "It's hilarious, fantastic and sheer joy," featuring folk music at its best.

How does a show make its way in the theater industry? In 2022 this new musical won the Musical Theater Heritage Residency Award in KC. Later that year it traveled to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where it won a #1 Best of Fest award. After the June Arts Asylum run, the show heads to New York City to play at the 59E59 Theaters. If the show makes it even further, you’ll have been a part of its success.

The entire event is still only $45 per person so put your group together and join us.

As always, tickets are nonrefundable. Should your schedule change you are welcome to give or sell your tickets to a friend.

This will be our last event until September as most arts groups will be on vacation. We're already planning interesting fall outings, including a trip to Lawrence to visit the newly refurbished Spencer Museum, several artist studios and private collections.

Architecture, Bluegrass and Country at the Historic Hotel Kansas City

1228 Baltimore Downtown KCMO

Visit one of Kansas City’s newest hotels and step into history at the same time on April 12 with Arts Alive KC’s first architecture-themed event.  You’ll be intimately introduced to Hotel Kansas City where art and architecture meet in a grand, classic—and classy— way.  Here, in the former Kansas City Club, you will learn about architecture as a high art, explore public rooms holding more than 100 years of memories and search out all the art and unique touches that have preserved this building for modern use. Top off the evening in Nighthawk, the hotel’s popular speakeasy, with live music by Martin Farrell, Jr. and the Blue Station Drifters from Lawrence, KS.

Arrive at 5:00 pm and you’ll be guided to our meeting room in this National Register of Historic Places landmark. Hotel-prepared hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be ready for you to enjoy as Amanda Loughlin of Rosin Preservation chats with us about architecture as high art and the challenges of saving and transforming a building like this one.  Rosin Preservation was involved in the hotel’s recent transformation and Loughlin will share her experiences with the process and her convictions about architecture as a unique and valuable fine art.

Then you’ll have time for a leisurely tour of the hotel’s fully renovated spaces to check it out for yourself. Take in the Grille Room with its tiled walls and floors plus a mural hand-painted a century ago by a Kansas City Club member. Don’t miss the Tudor Ballroom and its two-story stained-glass windows. Visit the library, the only room women could enter (via a special elevator) until the 1970s. You’ll want some photos of the breathtaking six-story staircase chandelier and the ceramic busts in the lobby of former club members Dwight Eisenhower, Harry Truman, Tom Pendergast and Omar Bradley.

Head down to the Nighthawk after 7 pm for live music by Martin Farrell, Jr. and the Blue Station Drifters from Lawrence, KS.  They will give us the full speakeasy experience with their “Cosmic Western” music, described as a classic country sound with bluegrass techniques, gospel harmonies and rock rhythms. After 9 pm the club offers a DJ and you’re invited to stay.

In Nighthawk (the Kansas City Club’s former bowling alley) set up your own tab at the bar and, if you’re still hungry, order from Nighthawk’s small plate menu.

Cost is $45 per person.  As always, tickets are non-refundable. If your schedule changes you are welcome to give away (or sell) your tickets.

Visit to The Studios Inc followed by an evening of jazz at the American Jazz Museum and the Blue Room

As we kick off our Arts Alive events for 2023, we take a moment to appreciate our loyal members and especially our board who have steered us through COVID, inflation, the Ukraine conflict and the uncertainties we face every day, and who have worked diligently to present programs that our members have enjoyed over the past 23 years. Our arts community needs us now more than ever to support their efforts and help them as artists to sustain their careers.

We begin Friday, January 13th with a visit to The Studios Inc followed by an evening of jazz at the American Jazz Museum and the Blue Room. We start off at The Studios Inc at 5:00 pm where upon arrival we'll be treated to refreshments and beverages as we enter the exhibit hall to view Mind the Gap, a solo exhibition of new work by Kathy Liao who will be there to greet us and discuss her new body of work. Kathy Liao just received the national Artadia Award and is the only local artist to be so honored. She also just completed a new work installed at the new KCI. In addition to Kathy Liao's studio, the studios of Harold Smith, Judith G. Levy, and Hong Chun Zhang will be open and these artists will also be present to discuss their work.

We leave The Studios Inc in the East Crossroads at 6:15 and drive the short distance to the American Jazz Museum at 18th and Vine to enjoy the Blue Room "All-Stars" led by pianist Charles Williams and vocalist Lisa Henry.  Stake out seats in the Atrium then wander through the museum before returning to the Atrium to enjoy supper provided by our favorite caterer, Michael Wyatt. Water and soda will be available with dinner or you can purchase other drinks at the Blue Room. We’ll head back to the Blue Room between 7:00 and 7:30 to enjoy the "All-Stars" concert starting at 7:30.  The band will play two sets and two bartenders will be available to serve drinks from the cash bar throughout the concert.

80 works by local and nationally known artists. In times of political, social and economic strife,

adornment becomes our balm of choice. As we invest in objects to further our personal style,

we begin to feel confident and find comfort in this chaotic world. Adorned will excite you like

few other exhibits have and the new director, JoAnn Northrup, will lead us through the

collection of these amazing artworks.

After the tour, we’ll have lunch prepared by the JCCC Culinary School, then head to the Johnson

County Arts and Heritage Center at 88th and Metcalf for the matinee performance of

Always...Patsy Cline, a musical about the life and songs of singer Patsy Cline, one of the most

influential vocalists of the 20th century and one of the first country music artists to cross over

into pop. This is down home country humor at its finest and we’ll enjoy an afternoon of music

as we relive the story of this legendary country singer who died tragically in a 1963 plane crash.

Cost of the entire day including lunch is only $35 per person, so sign up quickly as the theater is

small to join us for another memorable Arts Alive event.

Englewood Arts

In the 23 years since Arts Alive began presenting monthly events, we've never been to Independence but now there's a very interesting venue to offer our membership!

Saturday afternoon, September 17th we'll meet at noon at the newly restored Englewood Arts Center. This area of Independence houses many small shops, an historic movie theater and a fabulous restaurant, Vivilore, which you might want to check out for a future visit. Englewood will eventually become the centerpiece for artists to work, present their work and live in the "arts" neighborhood.

We'll assemble in the lobby of the Englewood Arts Center and upon arrival have a locally catered lunch of shrimp and sausage gumbo, rice, cornbread, and a wonderful dessert.

After touring the building with the director, Michael Baxley, there will be a glassblowing demonstration as well as music provided by local live music group.

For those of you with extra time, the Truman Home is close by as is the newly re-opened Truman Library and you may want to proceed on your own to visit these venues.

The entire afternoon is only $35.00 per person and includes lunch, drinks, music, and tour of the facility. Get your friends together and join us for another unique Arts Alive cultural event.

Late summer August Event

Arts Alive, now in its 23rd year of presenting monthly cultural events, begins the late summer with another wonderful evening of visual and performing arts. We'll meet at the Historic 21c Museum Hotel at 5pm on Saturday, August 27th, where we'll tour the current exhibit of contemporary art. This national hotel chain fully restored the original 1888 hotel in 2017 to include a museum and chef-driven restaurant. The museum changes exhibitions every 10 months bringing artwork of leading contemporary artists to each of their hotels. Jori Cheville is the Museum Manager and she will discuss the current works and lead us through the hotel's exhibition titled Labor&Materials.

We'll leave the hotel at 6pm and walk one block to Banksia, where a box supper awaits us. We've loved their food in the past and they'll open their restaurant especially for us. They have plenty of seating for our group and they'll have water and a full cash bar ready for us.

We then proceed to the City Stage Theater on the ground floor of Union Station for the 7:30 curtain of the Kansas City Actors Theatre presentation of About Alice, an award-winning play written by Calvin Trillin. Mr. Trillin grew up in Kansas City and graduated from Southwest High School. He careered in New York City and wrote for the New York Magazine for many years. In About Alice, Calvin Trillin looks back at their time together and beautifully details what made Alice special, and what made their time together so great.

Get your friends together and join us. Get your reservation in quickly as we are limited to 80 guests. The entire evening is specially priced at $35 and will sell out fast. We look forward to welcoming you to another exceptional Arts Alive evening.

Black Box Theater and Kansas City Jazz Orchestra SOLD OUT

As the cultural arts community begins to unite with community presentations, Arts Alive continues to discover unique venues where artists are coming together again. We don't have access to visit intimate personal collections in homes, so the next best approach is to seek out the best local artists in their studios. On Friday, June 17th, we've organized a visit to a building in the West Bottoms where a large number of artists have their studios. Referred to as the Seed Crusher Studios, this four story warehouse building will open their studios for a visit, to discuss their art, and see their latest work. We'll have supper and drinks in the building. Tours begin at 6pm on the ground floor. Many of the 15 studios will be open. We'll meet Laura Nugent, Susan White, Lori Raye Erickson, Joe Gregory and Mark Hennick plus others who may be present.

At 7:30 we'll head to the Black Box Theater just a block away and settle into our seats for an evening with the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra. Heidi Van runs the theater and the locatioin among the warehouses in the West Bottoms offers a unique setting for theater and live music performances. The KCJO brings together the best of local jazz artists. This evening features Kelley Gant with her beautiful voice backed by Alyssa Murray on piano, Seth Lee on bass and Matt Leifer on drums. The concert begins at 8pm. Our group has reserved seating as the sun sets on a beautiful June evening. The venue has a bar where additional drinks may be purchased. Get a group of your friends together and come on down for another wonderful Arts Alive evening. Now in our 23rd year, we find the best artists and venues in our wonderful city. The cost is still the same $45 and includes both venues, boxed supper and drinks with dinner. Addresses for both buildings are found below and your GPS will get you to the venues.

Newly Renovated Kansas City Museum and New Agnes Arts Center

On Saturday, May 21st, Arts Alive will visit one of the most important museums in Kansas City. The Kansas City Museum was founded in 1910. It occupies the fifty room home of lumber baron, Robert A. Long.. The museum has been closed since 2007 while being completely renovated. The newly opened museum is dedicated to the rich history of Kansas City and shows our rich heritage through rooms full of stories of our founding leaders and their families.

The Museum is located in the northeast neighborhood and overlooks the Missouri River to its north. 3218 Gladstone is easy to find as you drive east of downtown along Independence Avenue and turn north at Benton Boulevard. We'll meet at 5:15pm just after the museum closes to the public. We'll have private tours with docents who will lead us through the three floors of exhibits. The displays are extensive. You may want to return to spend additional time learning about our city's history.

We'll leave between 6:30 and 7 and drive a short distance to the Agnes Arts Center, 1341 Agnes Ave. The Arts Center is housed in an old police training facility. It is now serving as studios for 15 artists, many of whom will be there to greet us and show us their current work. We'll also have a box supper for each person and an assortment of drinks.

We'll tour the studios and visit the Plug Gallery, which is also in the space. The Gallery is featuring artist Angelica Sandoval and her work entitled "Introspection". You may eat upon arrival or wander through the studios first then break for supper. You may recognize some of the artists like Philo Northrup, Jorge Garcia Almodovar, JT Daniels, Diana Heise, Elina Jurado, John Kline, Nate and Jamil Lee, Andre Melchor, Grant Miller, Emily Blair Quinn, Andrew Schell, Kate Suchan and Davin Watne. Davin is the director and also runs the UMKC Gallery on their campus.

If you haven't already had a full dose of the arts, while you're eating and enjoying the studios, a local band will be entertaining us. Scotch Hollow, an acoustic roots band, teams up down-home delta blues with good old-fashioned country twang and silky vocals. Just as the name implies, Scotch Hollow is as smooth as your favorite whiskey!

The entire event is only $45 so mark your calendar, invite a few friends and come enjoy another unique Arts Alive experience.

Ailey II at the Folly - SOLD OUT

Our favorite dance group, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, will return to Kansas City after an 18 month hiatus and we've reserved your seat for the performance on Friday, April 8th. The performance will feature Ailey II, the younger dancers who have been apprenticing with Ailey on their dance journey with the company.

Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey was formed in 1983 and Kansas City is the only home outside of the New York City headquarters. Mr. Ailey began bringing his company to KC in 1960s soon after forming the company in 1958. He loved our city and was a fan of jazz, especially Charlie Parker. William Jewell College first introduced Ailey and his company and continued to bring them back often. When Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey was formed and with Mr. Ailey's blessing and encouragement, year around dance classes were offered. Ailey Camp was founded to bring at risk children together each summer for the "camp experience" centered around dance.

We will convene at 6pm in the Shareholders Room on the second level of the Folly for drinks and a light supper catered by Banksia. Members of the Ailey company will speak to us about the company and their world-wide dance schedule. At about 7:15 we’ll head downstairs to our seats and enjoy the performance.

Get your friends together and join us for this wonderful evening. Parking is available near the Folly, located at 12th and Central. As protocol is changing regarding vaccinations and masks, we will follow the city and the Folly mandate and you will receive a notice from us on Wednesday before the concert.

SOLD OUT The (R) Evolution of Steve Jobs

SOLD OUT The (R) Evolution of Steve Jobs

Arts Alive has always wanted to attend a performance and support the Lyric Opera but the seat price has been out of our price range. As we come out of the worst of the pandemic, even the major arts groups, in order to rebuild their audiences, has offered some attractive pricing and fortunately we've been offered an amazing price which will afford us the opportunity to see one of the most interesting new works available to a limited number of producing opera companies. The Lyric, the Atlanta Opera and the Austin Opera have jointly added The (R) Evolution of Steve Jobs to their repertoire and we've circled a limited number of tickets for our members.

Steve Jobs literally changed our world in profound ways, but his immense achievements in technology were marked by turmoil in his personal life. This opera, set to music and voice, brings this complex icon to the stage as we witness both the clarity but also the quirkiness of the man who literally changed our world through technology.

We'll first gather at the Buttonwood Art Space at 5:30 where we'll enjoy a lite supper as we wander through their current exhibit entitled ABSTRACT: He'ART', a grouping of 125 works of art offered by our local art community. Half of the proceeds of all sales go to the Ronald McDonald House and half to the artist. Prices start around $100 and are available online or by visiting from now until March 24th. There are still beautiful works available.

Get your group together, buy your tickets and join us for another Arts Alive special evening.

Midwest Trust Center - Opus 76 Quartet and Nerman Museum

SOLD OUT

Finding new and exciting cultural programs in these times of COVID is a challenge as our primary emphasis is to be safe and vigilant with our audience. In the past we could visit private collections as well as discover new artists who are making Kansas City their home.

On Sunday afternoon, February 20th, we've put together a program of discovery as we head to the Johnson County Community College and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art where we'll get acquainted with the newest musical ensemble who call Kansas City their home. The Opus 76 Quartet have made a national name for themselves in only two years. As Artists-in-residence at the Midwest Trust Center, they will perform a series of concerts and the one we've chosen will showcase the works of Mozart and Dvorak. The concert begins at 2 pm.

Following the concert we'll head to the Nerman and meet the new director JoAnne Northrup. JoAnne will lead us through the newly installed artworks and show us the three artists chosen by the Charlotte Street Foundation, Kathy Lao, glyneisha and Cory Imig. In addition, she's offering us some afternoon wine, fruit and cheese to enjoy while we visit the museum. The latest KC Studio Magazine highlights these Fellows in a wonderful interview with each of them.

Please join us for this exciting Sunday afternoon at the college. This special event is priced at $40.00 so put a group together and come enjoy another Arts Alive event. In our 22nd year, we continue to discover the arts and artists that make our community such an enjoyable place to live.

Megan and Julia, Two Wild Women of Song

Welcome to the New Year. We're glad we made it through the past 18 months during the pandemic, offering events where we could present the best of the cultural arts in Kansas City safely and with our membership as first priority. We're still Alive and the January event will be one you won't want to miss.

We begin the evening at 5:30pm at the historic Fire House at 45th and Troost. This 1931 gem has been fully restored to handle weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and special events. The space can comfortably and safely accommodate up to 100 people with cabaret style seating.

Outside there will be a display in front of several classic “art" cars done by the artist Philo Northrup. You may have seen them driving around the city and they are wonderful. Once inside you'll be treated to a supper by our favorite caterer, Michael Wyatt.

We'll begin the entertainment at 6:30 featuring singer Megan Birdsall and her trio. She's performed for us on several occasions over our 22 year history and has always been one of our favorite musicians. After a break to refill drinks, finish our dinner and converse with other members, we'll present Julia Othmer, singer, pianist and songwriter who has recently moved back to Kansas City after performing in the Los Angeles area. She'll have just returned from a tour in Europe. We'll be treated to some of her new songs as well as old favorites.

The entire evening is still $45.00 so call your friends, put a group together and join us for a wonderful evening.

Belger Crane Yard & Dance Nation at The Unicorn Theatre

Friday, December 10th, we begin at one of our favorite galleries, the Belger Crane Yard. Journeys features 9 ceramic artists who were either born in China or are of Chinese descent. These artists examine the intersection between Eastern and Western cultures. The work deals with cultural, religious and economic symbolism and touches on themes of dislocation, globalization and identity.

We'll assemble at 5:30pm and while looking at the exhibit, we'll pass out box suppers prepared for us by Thelma's Catering, a not for profit, volunteer based restaurant located at the Resurrection Church at 31st and Troost. While dining, the staff of the Belger will discuss the exhibit and answer questions about the 9 artists and their works.

Before we leave, we will also visit the artists in residence studios and check out items that these local artists have made especially for the holiday season. All work in Journeys and the studios will be for sale. In addition, in the same building is housed the Lawrence Lithography Workshop and Michael Sims, the owner and master printer has agreed to remain open to view his presses and available prints by local, regional and nationally recognized artists.

We'll leave the Belger in time to drive to the Unicorn Theatre to enjoy Dance Nation, the Clare Barron 2019 Pulitzer Prize Finalist. The themes of joy and abandon of dancing, while addressing the changes of body and mind of its preteen characters as they peer over the precipice toward adulthood should stimulate our audience.

Seats are limited and the entire evening is $45. Get a group together and join us for this special evening. You must be vaccinated to attend this event. Please bring your vaccination card, you will need to show it at the Unicorn Theater. The Unicorn is also requiring masks. There is ample free parking at the Belger Crane Yard. There are two parking areas next to the Unicorn but the street in front may still be torn up as the city prepares for the streetcar line south to the UMKC campus.

Kansas City Repertory Theater "Mary's Wedding

We've missed you all. And the cultural art world has suffered greatly through the pandemic. As our city deals with COVID, vaccinations and the re-opening of entertainment venues, Arts Alive has put together a September event that should be of interest as we slowly return to the events we've loved over the years.

Mark your calendar for Friday, September 17th, and join us as we explore the beautiful new home of the Charlotte Street Foundation. Then travel a short distance to Liberty Memorial’s south lawn and WW1 Museum to enjoy the Kansas City Repertory production of Mary's Wedding, directed by Stuart Carden, the Reps new artistic director.

We'll meet at 5 p.m. at Charlotte Street, located just off Roanoke at 3333 Wyoming and tour the exhibit entitled “With Liberty and Justice”. Nine artists have been selected whose work reflects the history of America, evaluates the gaps in historical knowledge and questions the mythology of America in our collective imagination. The new facility is a masterpiece, redesigned by the architectural firm of Hufft and Associates.

We'll then proceed to Liberty Memorial for the 80 minute performance of Mary's Wedding, a new play written by Stephen Massicotte that takes place in 1914. WW1 is beginning and the world is collapsing into a brutal wartime experience. Meanwhile, a young couple has fallen in love and they experience their feelings for each other as the uncertainties of war surround them. This epic story of love, hope and survival should be a memorable experience.

When you arrive at Charlotte Street, we'll have drinks waiting for you. After touring the exhibit and beautiful new space, we'll offer you an additional beverage and box dinner to take with you to our next venue. Bring your chair or blanket as you arrive for the Rep performance. We'll try to reserve a space for our group and we'll provide proper spacing for you to relax and enjoy your picnic supper prepared by Urban Café while you enjoy the first Rep play of the new season.

Tickets for the play are valued at $30 each, however, we've arranged a special price for the play along with our visit to Charlotte Street Foundation, drinks, dinner and dessert for only $40 per ticket.

If the weather doesn't cooperate, your tickets will be good for Saturday or Sunday, the final performances.

We look forward to seeing all of you on the 17th.

Danny Cox and Friends October 18, 2020 4:00 PM SOLD OUT

Dannycoxsinger.jpg

For those of you fortunate enough to have attended our September event featuring Barnaby Bright at the Fire Station at 45th and Troost, we were treated to an exceptional performance. We moved inside due to the weather and everyone in attendance felt relieved that the long hiatus due to COVID was finally over. A few brought picnics while others listened quietly and safely with a bottled drink of choice.

With this experience under our belts, we have arranged a second monthly event scheduled for Sunday afternoon, October 18th at 4:00 PM (no Chiefs game) at the Plexpod located at 39th and Gillham Road. We've arranged for a lawn party just behind the parking garage so bring your blankets, chairs, picnics and warm clothes as mid-October might be chilly. In case of inclement weather, we'll move to the garage which is large enough when empty to handle a large group.

Danny Cox has long entertained various groups around the city with ballads, folk music and popular songs. He originally moved to Kansas City in the late 1960s and was a mainstay at the Vanguard Coffee House at 43rd and Main Street. He brings his quartet and beautiful, deep voice to us for an afternoon of songs, memories and stories of his early days in Kansas City. Again we are limited in the number of people allowed so sign up quickly. The cost is $35.00 and includes bottled drinks of beer, wine and water. We look forward to another cultural event and a chance for you to get out of your home and support the arts.

Barnaby Bright Sept 27th 5:00 PM-SOLD OUT

Barnaby Bright.jpg

We've missed seeing you at our normal monthly events but more importantly we've missed supporting the cultural arts and artists who live in our community and need to perform to survive. Our board is committed to find ways to support the arts but we must do it safely as we wait to find a vaccine that will alleviate some of the problems we encounter as we work through the pandemic. We surveyed our membership and the responses were varied but the majority would support a program that protected the audience as well as the performers.

We've picked the date of Sunday, September 27th, beginning at 5:00 pm in the parking lot of the Fire Station #31, located at 4516 Troost. There will be tables and chairs, socially distanced and we can allow 50 people to attend.

Food will NOT be served so you might consider bringing a picnic.

Individual servings of wine, beer and water will be  available and each patron will have two drink tickets.

We will be featuring the musical performance of Barnaby Bright, a dynamic duo who have performed all over the world but call Kansas City their home. Nathan and Becky Bliss grew up in our city and still reside here. They've performed with the  likes of Nora Jones and The Lumineers and have just released a new album which will be available at the concert. Their music relates to the times we're living and reflects on family, love, generosity and healing.

Sign up quickly as we are limited by city code to a smaller audience than usual. We'll continue to find programs that we can present safely. Your suggestions for the board to consider are welcome.

Access to the bathrooms will be available inside the Fire Station.

Mission Hills private collection and "Noises Off!": a comedic play

NoiseOff.jpg

On Saturday, April 4, Arts Alive will visit a private art collection in a beautiful Mission Hills home before going to see one of the funniest plays ever written at the Spencer Theatre, UMKC campus. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. for a visit to the home of Dr. and Mrs. Mark Cohen where we'll enjoy a garden reception and a tour of their extensive collection that includes works by Hung Liu, Ebony Patterson, Paul Anthony Smith and Roger Shimomura.

We'll leave just after 7 p.m. for a short commute to the UMKC campus for the 8 p.m. curtain of ‘Noises Off’. This Michael Frayn comedy, originally staged in London in 1982, has been a crowd-pleaser on many stages. An English theatrical troupe's production goes horribly wrong, resulting in flubbed lines, missed cues, slamming doors and falling trousers. This play-within-a-play has become a modern comedy classic.

Put a group together and join us for another Arts Alive adventure. Sign up quickly as we have limited seating for this event. Those who can join us will be sent a follow up email with  directions and details to the Cohen residence the week before our event. We look forward to greeting you at another fun cultural evening.
