Kansas City Jazz Saxophonist Kurt Wheeler will present a combination lecture, photography showcase, and music performance with his jazz quintet.  The presentation will last approximately 2 hours.  With his band set up, he will give a talk about his experience as a three-week artist in residence in Utah.  This talk will be accompanied by a slideshow including many of the images that he captured while at Capitol Reef. During the presentation he will describe many of his experiences, the people that he met, and the stories behind the images.  The jazz quintet will perform his compositions inspired from Capitol Reef, interspersed with the talk, most of which correspond directly to the images. These include “Sulphur Creek”, “Sunset Point”, and “Rappelling into Party Canyon”.  

 We'll begin the evening at 5:30PM at the Diastole Scholars’ Center on Hospital Hill. The Center, a private UMKC off-campus facility, is the former home of Dr. and Mrs. Dimond who lived there until 1983. The expansive collections throughout three floorsof Chinese and Japanese paintings and prints, woodcarvings, photographs, gourds, memorabilia, silver, and books, including 3,000 versions of Omar Khayyam’s most famous work, The Rubaiyat, will enthrall you. 

 Starting at 7 PM, Kurt Wheeler and his quintet will captive you with a musical and visual excursion to Capitol Reef,Utah, in the Kiva, the dynamic, informal theater-in-the-round at Diastole.
